Care For Some Insurance Fraud?

Bello and I took Belle to the Bay Area (San Francisco Area) for the weekend. We stayed with Layla and took my father out for Father’s Day.

On our way to the restaurant, Bello and I got into a little fender bender. We were approaching a stop light when the person in front of us slammed on their brakes, causing Bello to slam on his, creating a chain reaction to those behind us. Unfortunately, we were rear ended by the guy behind us. So, we pull over.

When the guy got out, he had a hard time speaking English so it was difficult to communicate. We wrote down all his information but when we asked him for his driver’s license, he panicked a little. He tried explaining to us that he didn’t have it with him and that it was at home. Bello and I told him it was okay but we had to get the police out here to make sure that he was driving legally.

In the mean time, the guy calls his friend out and says that he speaks better English and can translate. We didn’t think anything of it and agreed that it was a good idea. WRONG.
When his friend arrived, he proceeded to involve us in a fraudulent case. He wanted us to take his info and tell the police that he was driving when we were rear ended. I told him that what he was suggesting is insurance fraud and I would have nothing to do with it. It was all so very odd and I was uncomfortable with these men. I was glad that Bello was there.

Anyway, the guy’s friend kept insisting that he could get into his car and run into us so that we can say he did it. I was shocked. Then the guy started to offer us cash. He had no idea the value of American money because he said, “We could pay $100 or $400, something like that.” I was becoming irritated because all I wanted was for the police to come and verify this guy’s license so that we could get to the restaurant.

Finally the police came and it turned out that the guy who hit us was legit but the DMV still hadn’t sent him is license. The guy was afraid that his car would be towed and that’s why his friend wanted to take the blame for everything.

I understood but they still wanted me to not report it to the insurance company and instead they wanted to pay me cash for it. Being a Criminal Justice Major, I would rather do things the right way so I reported it to my agent this morning.

What a weird incident.
